Eileen Ford, Ford Modeling Agency

Unknown-1

Beverly Johnson, supermodel

As an always tall, always lover of fashion and beauty, my first dream was to become a model.  As a child, I gobbled up (and collected – much to my parent’s frustration) magazines like Seventeen, Glamour, Harper’s Bazaar and, of course Vogue.  I knew all of the models by name, along with their height, weight and measurements.  I almost worshipped Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley, Iman and my idol, Beverly Johnson.  As I dug deeper into my great love, I discovered Eileen Ford, the founder of The Ford Modeling Agency.  Anyone who was anybody wanted to or did belong to her agency.

In my opinion, that’s why we now have ‘super models’ with big paydays. Long before Tyra Banks and America’s Top Model, she demanded excellence and settled for nothing less. I read books about her and she was quite an inspiration on being a lady, being excellent and being an Entrepreneur.   I haven’t thought about her in a while, but she profoundly touched my life and the lives of many others who may not even know it.  She helped to create the images and ads that have influenced what we wear, eat, drive and more. I salute her and know that her legacy will live on.  RIP Eileen Ford

You may or may not know my story, but I started my career right out of Beauty School.  The only twist is, I went to Beauty School in Houston, TX, took my test one day and moved to the Washington, DC area the very next day!  Of course, I had no friends or family to start with  – and amazingly enough, there weren’t any clients lined up waiting for me to do their hair!  LOL
